Rushcliffe Community Cohesion Network
Promoting diversity, acceptance and participation

Rushcliffe Community Cohesion Network (RCCN)

Rushcliffe Community Cohesion Network aims to promote diversity, acceptance and participation in order to develop a cohesive community in Rushcliffe.

It aims for Rushcliffe to be a place where:

Everyone has an equal chance to live, play, learn and work free from any form of discrimination or prejudice. We want communities to live in harmony and mutuality - understanding, valuing, respecting and celebrating diversity. A place where there is a strong sense of trust in institutions locally to act fairly and a community in which people feel able to participate

Annual Events

RCCN organises a very popular annual event in the Council at Rushcliffe Civic Centre.

The third Annual Event in March 2011 took as its theme, Hate Crime and its Impact on Community Cohesion in Rushcliffe. Residents, police, voluntary and community organisations, statutory agencies and local councilors came together to consider Hate Crime in Rushcliffe and how best to respond as a community.

‘I found the RCCN event extremely useful and a great way to network with colleagues from all three sectors.  I will continue to keep in touch with everyone and I look forward to the next event’, Charlotte Haywood, Ann Craft Trust,

The 2010 event  focused on Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual and Transgender; Mental Health and Faith in Rushcliffe and in 2009 the inaugural event explored community cohesion in context of the borough and the role a network would play in supporting our diverse communities.

Supporting Community Initiatives

The network has also worked with Rushcliffe Youth Assembly to explore issues of young people and community cohesion and with the South Nottinghamshire Community Safety Partnership to organise a Big Lunch during the Keyworth Week of Action.

Exemplar Initiative

RCCN is regarded locally and nationally as an example of an innovative approach and good practice:

‘The RCCN looks impressive. It is interesting that it is so broad and is a partnership coordinated by a voluntary sector organisation'

Professor Ted Cantle OBE, whose Report in December 2001 led to the concept of “community cohesion” being adopted, Chair of the Institute of Community Cohesion (iCoCo)

E-bulletins

Members receive regular E Bulletins which provide information about resources, activities, events, services and training consultation.

Examples include the booklet  'How to Make Your Organisation Lesbian, Gay and Bisexual Friendly', an Invitation to attend Islam in Britain Today Event; publicity about the Visually Impaired Reading Group and details of the Rushcliffe 50 + Forum.

E Bulletins also enable members to participate in consultation – sharing their views about The Big Picture - Rushcliffe Borough Council’s core strategy on the future of the borough including housing, jobs and climate; and the Accessibility of Polling Stations.

As a result of an RCCN e-mailing, young people with learning disabilities had a day abseiling and caving at Edale Activity Centre in Derbyshire run by the Youth Hostel Association through Community Cohesion Agenda

Thank you for alerting me to this brilliant opportunity…..individuals were challenged and maybe put outside of their comfort zone a little bit.  Everyone achieved something they wouldn’t normally do‘ Ellie Tyson, Community Access Worker, Community Learning Disability Team
