BME Carers Support Worker Project
Caring for BME Carers

altWe’re delighted to welcome Seema Fakey to our staff Team as a BME Carer’s Support Worker. In a short question and answer session, Seema tells us a bit about herself and what her work will involve.

Tell us a bit about yourself

My name is Seema Fakey. I am your new BME Carer’s Support Worker! I have a diverse working background. I trained as a teacher in India before I came to the UK. I have worked as an Admin Assistant, a Teaching Assistant, a Parental Involvement Coordinator and I worked for a College Library. I have a big heart for working in the community, and I am married with two children.

Who do you support as a BME Carer’s Support Worker?

I will be giving support, information and advice to Carer’s who are from BME backgrounds which stands for Black and Minority Ethnic. This includes people from Asian, Indian and Afro-Caribbean backgrounds as well as those from other European countries such as Poland.

What are some of the problems Carer’s from BME background face and how can you help?

BME Carers can experience many difficulties. Some people may have English as a second language. There may be cultural differences and different expectations for Carers. It can be difficult to be a Carer in the UK if you come from a different country, it can be difficult to know who to turn to. Sometimes Carers just need somebody to talk to because they can feel isolated. Even if they speak good English, it can be comforting to talk to a Support Worker in their own language.

I visited a Carer a few days ago who has many problems and she is caring for a relative who is an older Asian woman. She said to me, “You are from an ethnic minority background and I am too, so I know you will understand my problems more than anyone else”

What languages do you speak?

I speak English, Hindi, Punjabi and Urdu.

What will your role involve as BME Carer’s Support Worker?

There are two areas to my work.

At first I will be trying to establish contacts with other BME groups in Rushcliffe, Gedling and Broxtowe to discover what help is currently available for BME Carers. I will also research the needs of BME Carers to identify what their needs are and if there are gaps in services.

I will visit and support BME Carers who are referred to me either by themselves or by others to offer information, advice and support.  I will be able to signpost people to the help they need and give them support.

How can people contact you if they want to get support or find out more about your work?

I am based at Rushcliffe Community and Voluntary Service in West Bridgford and I work full time.

People can call me at the office on 0115 9816988.
